International graduates with recently expired or expiring post-graduation work permits (PGWP) in Canada will be eligible for an additional or extended work permit for up to 18 months. The facilitative process to extend their work permit will start on April 6, 2023, and will allow Canada to retain high-skilled talent.

Those whose PGWP has already expired in 2023 and those who were eligible for the 2022 PGWP facilitative measure can also apply for an additional 18-month work permit.

The additional work permit will allow eligible applicants to continue contributing to the Canadian economy while gaining valuable work experience and preparing for the opportunity to apply for permanent residence.

This move is expected to address Canada's labour shortage by retaining skilled international graduates who are already well-integrated into the Canadian labour market.
